Dehydrator Diaries 6/30 - Open Sesame

We had a big beautiful bag of organic raw sesame seeds on our hands from our bulk what did we do? 

Fire up the dehydrator of course!

Our first batch (savory items):

Sesame coated kale chips. 
This little one woke up at the crack of dawn and was found polishing off a whole tray...teach me to sleep in!

Oh yes, very tasty.  This is basically my regular recipe and I added 3/4 cup fresh, home made tahini (sesame seed butter).  They are thicker and more satisfying this way.  It also keeps me from eating the entire batch in one sitting...although that is pretty fun too.

I made these using the recipe by Dr. Cousens in his book Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine.  They turned out more like a flatbread, but were very good.  I used chia seeds instead of the black sesame seeds.  I liked how they kind of melt in your mouth...makes them good baby/toddler crackers.

Second batch (sweet items):

Sesame Cookies. 

I had to change a diaper and I came back to an artistic display of sesame cookies!

Recipe found at EatRawVegan.  These were just ok.  I know they're super cute and all (thank you heart shaped cookie cutter), but they are lacking something.  Had I taken the time to read the entire recipe, I would have seen that the author says the same thing.  I think I'll give these another go next week and add a few "extras" to spice them up a bit.  To be continued...

Banana Gum

Just dehydrated banana slices, no sesame seeds here, but we had extra bananas and extra dehydrator trays to fill.  When you dehydrate the slices at 115 for about 12 hours they're kind of chewy and gum like, so we call them banana gum.  They're usually consumed instantly...sometimes even before they make it out of the dehydrator.

Why does this get stars?  Because it's absolutely delicious and I made it up me-own-self!
I have to share the recipe with you's that good.  It's almost like a dessert for breakfast (or lunch, or dinner, or midnight nursing get the picture).

Crooked Monkey Grawnola

1 cup medjool dates (soaked 2-4 hours)
2 ripe bananas
1/4 cup agave
2 tsp vanilla extract (or 1/2 vanilla bean, scraped)
2 tsp sea salt
2 Tbs raw carob powder (or raw cacao powder)
2 Tbs lemon juice
2 1/2 cups raw pecans
2 cups raw almonds
1 1/2 cups raw sesame seeds
1 cup raw cacao nibs

Throw the dates and the bananas (plus about 2-3 Tbs of the date soak water) into your food processor and let it whirl until a smooth paste is formed.  Then add the agave, vanilla, salt, carob and lemon juice.  Process until well combined.  Scrape mixture into a large mixing bowl.  Using the food processor (no need to rinse it) pulse the pecans and almonds a few times to chop them up.  Then add the sesame seeds, pecans, almonds and cacao nibs to the date mixture and mix it all up. 

Do NOT forget to lick the spoon...

Spread the mixture evenly onto dehydrator screens lined with teflex (or unbleached parchment paper) and dehydrate at 115 for 12 hours.  Flip it over, peel away the teflex and dehydrate another 12 hours or so.  Keep it in an airtight container in the fridge so it's nice and crunchy when you eat it with your choice of milk (preferably nut, seed, hemp or soy!).

Wow, it's really yummy you guys...go make it.

  8. Oooh, and I totally will go try that grawnola recipe!! I love that you have cereal midnight nursing snacks...that was always one of my things too!
