CROOK

Figs and Braids

Papa is doing this crazy 36 hour work marathon thing (don't ask) and won't be home tonight.  So we decided to make it a "Girls Night In". Our plans were cake, cute braids and cuddles.

CAKE

This is a fig.

This is the inside of a fig.

Yummy, right?
Um...no.
I'm not really a fig-lover.  I can handle them dry and tossed in fancy salads or in some sort of cookie, but fresh?  No thanks.  I think it's a texture thing.  There's really not any other fruit or veggie that I don't like.  I even like durian (ewww!).

The past 2 weeks I've gotten a nice little bag of fresh figs from my CSA box.  Great!  So I had to find a way to use them up.  I googled vegan fig recipes and they were all salads or grilled figs.  Then I found this little Fig Spice Cake recipe and decided to give it a try.  I subbed coconut sugar for the brown sugar and coconut oil for the sunflower oil.  This is how it turned out:

Figgylicious!

CUTE BRAIDS

F & E found this little braid book at a garage sale a while back and have been asking for me to braid their hair ever since.  I don't know why I procrastinated, it was seriously easy.

Pick some embroidery thread (yes...I have a messy thread box!) and wrap away!

E was a bit wiggly and we made it about 1/2 way down.  I added a pink button for flair.

F was much more patient and we made it almost all the way down, then added a vintage bell.  I'm a little worried she'll whap herself in the head with it, but she assures me she'll "be safe".

CUDDLES

Papa, I miss you dearly...but I have to admit, I am happy to cuddle in bed with all three of my little girls.

They're all off to the land of nod, so I am going to go join them.  I had to get up after everyone was asleep and do some stuff.  Plus I wanted to get a sweet picture of them all cuddled up, but I don't dare wake them or there will be more arguments about who gets what pillow, who gets what covers, who gets what part of Mommy to sleep on, etc...

Night!

  1. I'm always tempted to get pics of my kids sleeping, too, and know I'll be annoyed with myself someday for not taking the risk...but it's such work to get them to sleep that I don't dare wake them. They're so angelic and so STILL when they're asleep, aren't they?
Good luck with the mothering marathon...I find I get more creative and involved when I see it as a challenge to get through, and the kids have lots of fun! Love the hair wraps!

  4. What a lovely evening! The cake looks delicious too ... my mom has a fig tree (and I love them in the raw form) ... unfortunately, many of the figs haven't ripened just yet.

  5. I've always wanted to know how to wrap hair! I think we'll try it out this week and see how it goes.
